A faculty member for Northeastern’s security programs, training graduate students on IT management in the homeland security arena, Jim Holst has been working in counterterrorism for 17 years. He brings a Department of Defense perspective to his courses, which is critical for anyone who wants to work in homeland security.
Daniel Murphy puts a homeland security and emergency management lens on his work and his teachings. In his view, disaster preparedness is a critical piece of public health and urban planning. He encourages his students to gain insight into what is happening locally and globally from a political and economic standpoint to truly grasp the scale and importance of disaster prevention and response.

Come watch the critically acclaimed, hourlong documentary “The Black Miami” (as featured on Amazon Prime video) and partake in a discussion with its esteemed creator, Dr. Marvin Dunn. Guests will receive a special tour of the historic Lyric Theater, a community landmark in Overtown, the heart of Black Miami, and learn hidden stories of race and racial strife in the city’s history.
Dr. Dunn, also author of the books Black Miami in the Twentieth Century and A History of Florida Through Black Eyes, will discuss his documentary and what changes have occurred during the decade since it was originally released. Today, he is a champion of the truth, fighting against efforts he witnesses in the Sunshine State to minimalize the grave effects of slavery, decrease voter access, and erase Black history from school curriculums. Dr. Dunn recently received a $1.5 million grant from the Mellon Foundation to expand his “Teach the Truth” tours, which take participants to sites of racial violence, to other southern states.

After earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Northeastern, Chris LaColla enjoyed success in the airline industry before he joined MSC Cruises, the world’s third largest cruise line, in 2024. His goal: to continue growing the Geneva, Switzerland–based company’s recognition and market share in North America.
Kat Dobrov came to Northeastern for her undergraduate degree, and then stayed for her master’s, enjoying experiential learning adventures around the globe and making indelible connections. After stints in risk services at Wellington Management and Freddie Mac, she has landed at the U.S. Department of Defense to delve into cybersecurity services.

A globally respected marine biologist and social entrepreneur, Austin Gallagher has served as the lead scientist on more than 50 scientific expeditions across six continents, and is broadly trained with expertise spanning large marine animal tracking, behavioral ecology, physiology, genetics, plant science, and socioeconomics. In 2022, he partnered with wild tiger sharks to discover the world’s largest seagrass meadow in the Bahamas. He is a National Geographic Explorer, Fellow of the Explorer’s Club, Fulbright Scholar, former Forbes 30 Under 30 winner, and an honorary associate professor at the University of Exeter in the U.K.
